01/ THE CHALLENGE
Surfline, a US company engaged in burningWAN for a more strategic approach to their IT direction here in AUS. They had recently acquired Coastalwatch and were looking to move away from their current layer 2 network to a fully managed layer 3 model. This solution would have to be staged and rolled out with a thorough project plan and timeline. Cameras had to stay online, as live streaming was their primary revenue source.
The next challenge was locations; because their sites are situated mainly in surf clubs, there’s a lack of both quality fibre and mobile network infrastructure coverage, meaning burningWAN would need to research and test the correct solution for each site.
burningWAN had the task of replacing all connectivity across the sites with a view to overhaul all IT infrastructure for tightening security measures, allowing network visibility and ensuring 24/7 monitoring capability.
02/ SOLUTION
Multi carrier connectivity / SD-WAN & Security / vCTO / Managed Services
Surfline’s main need centred around an improved IT framework and the installation of reliable data connectivity to their remote locations. burningWAN consulted and designed a comprehensive WAN strategy with suitable options for each site. The plan included an integrated communications network delivering multi-carrier cellular and fibre connectivity services. In some of the trickier locations where NBN sky muster was available, we decided that was not good enough due to poor latency and dropouts, and that a dedicated cellular 5G solution would be a far better alternative. As part of progression and the next project phase we introduced an upgraded Managed SD-WAN & Smart Camera POC which is in early trial stages.
Our trust in burningWAN has allowed us to scale the business considerably. Their knowledge of the ICT landscape is second to none.

03/ OUTCOME
burningWAN has ensured each unique location has been precisely reviewed and a multi carrier, multi medium connectivity approach has been implemented for uptime, low latency and long term stability. Surfline is now able to deploy connectivity solutions on scale to all of its locations. Since burningWAN has taken over service management, Surfline has added additional sites to their group, for which we have provided full consulting, deployment and project management services. With the trial of an end-to-end secure SD-WAN solution, Surfline now has the ability to increase security, visibility and agility to their network.
